All About Air Conditioners for Loft Conversions
Loft conversions are commonplace across the UK, and in terms of temperature, they are the most extreme rooms in the home. They are either boiling hot in the summer or freezing cold in the winter. Fortunately, having an air conditioner installed in the loft completely solves this age-old problem. Not only do air conditioners provide effective cooling, but they are also extremely efficient heaters.
We only install the best-quality air conditioners that can withstand the loft's temperature extremes. Every unit we install is ‘whisper quiet,’ so if the conversion is an office or bedroom, you can work or sleep in peace!
We provide a free site survey no matter how big or small the installation. All surveys are carried out by our experienced air conditioning surveyors who can quickly advise on the ideal AC unit for your loft.
Ideal Systems for Loft Conversions
Low Wall-Mounted Air Conditioners
- Ideal for pitched roof loft conversions
- Well-placed below a sloping ceiling
- Out of sight, like traditional radiators
The majority of lofts have pitched roofs and do not have many full-sized walls; in these cases, we sometimes need to recommend specialist AC units.
Low wall-mounted air conditioners are ideal for loft conversions insofar as they are placed at a low level on the wall, which usually solves the problem of the sloping or low ceiling. They are more expensive than traditional high wall units, but customers often choose them because, like radiators, they are placed out of their line of sight. One unit is usually sufficient to provide both cooling and heating to a loft, but very large loft areas might require two units (e.g., when a five-bedroom house's loft has been converted).
Our surveyors will consider the room's layout when choosing an air conditioner location so that you get the most effective cooling/heating.
If you are only looking to cool your loft conversion, then 95% of installs use Single-Split Air Conditioners. They are the simplest and most cost-effective option available. They have one internal cooling unit and one external condenser box as shown in the image above).
The more single-splits you install, the more external condensers you require. If you are looking to install multiple units throughout your house and external space is at a premium, you may want to consider a multi-split system.
If you are looking to cool more than one room, a Multi-Split Air Conditioning System is often the best option. This is because you can have multiple internal units with only one external condenser box. This often helps with planning permission and also aesthetic appearance.
If your local council refuses planning permission, a water-cooled air conditioning system is an ideal solution .
Wall-Mounted Air Conditioners for Lofts
- Most cost-effective for taller lofts
- Easy retrofit without redecorating
- Premium designer models are available
Wall-mounted air conditioners can also be used in lofts with higher ceilings or at least one taller wall. They are cheaper than other air conditioners, and, like their low-wall counterparts, they are also easy to retrofit in rooms without the need for redecoration. They are long, thin, and placed at a high level on the wall.
There are also premium models of wall units (like the Gree Moda, Daikin Emura and Mitsubishi Zen units). They are a little more expensive; however, they are great-looking units.
Our surveyors will happily talk you through all the options available to ensure you get exactly what you are looking for.
