All About Air Conditioners for Shops

It is proven that a comfortable environment will keep customers on your premises for longer. In fact, on a hot summer day, customers are known to walk straight out of a shop if it’s too hot. Air Conditioners are also very effective heaters and keep your shop warm in cold winters. The simple addition of air conditioning units can quickly help increase your sales.

When selecting an air conditioner for a store, there are many factors to take into consideration. Room shape and unit placement can make a big difference in the experience of both the customers and staff. We wouldn’t recommend placing an aircon unit above the checkout; this avoids staff having a constant cold draft on them. However, many shop air conditioners are often placed by the entrance so that entering customers can get an instant blast of comfort (whether hot or cold air) and additional units throughout larger stores.

We provide a free site survey, no matter how big or small the job. All surveys are carried out by our highly-experienced air conditioning surveyors who can tackle even the complicated of shop installations.

Ideal Systems for Shops

Wall Mounted Air Conditioners

- Most cost-effective for shop installation

- Easy retrofit without redecoration

- Optimal placement maximises airflow

Wall-mounted air conditioners are usually the most cost-effective option to install in a shop. They are long, thin, and placed at a high level on the wall, making them easy to retrofit without the need for redecoration.

When choosing a wall-mounted unit, it is important that it is placed in the optimum position in the room to provide maximum airflow. If your room has a high heat load, it is often preferable to install multiple, less powerful units rather than fewer powerful ones (AC units that will cause unbalanced cooling). Some premium models look very aesthetically pleasing.

Single-split air conditioners have one internal cooling unit and one external condenser box. These are the most basic and common systems installed. They are ideal for cooling one small shop and are usually the most cost-effective option.

They are also used in situations where multiple air conditioners need to be controlled individually (e.g., heating an office in winter while still requiring cooling in a server room).

The more single-splits you install, the more external condensers you require. If external space is at a premium, please see the other options in this menu.

If you are looking to cool more than one room, a Multi-Split Air Conditioning System is often the best option. This is because you can have multiple internal units with only one external condenser box. This often helps with planning permission and also aesthetic appearance.

If your local council refuses planning permission, a water-cooled air conditioning system is ideal.

These systems are ideal for larger open-plan shops. While they can have two, three, or four internal cooling units, they only have one external condenser box. This means that less space is taken up on the building exterior.

They are typically used for cooling one large area and operate from the same control panel. Therefore, it is not possible to control the internal units individually. These units are unsuitable for cooling multiple rooms with different temperatures.

When selecting these units for an open-plan area, it’s important to consider whether you are likely to partition the room in the future. If partitioning is likely or you are looking for individual cooling control, then you should consider a Single-Split System.

Many commercial buildings in the UK, especially in London, do not have planning permission to place condenser boxes on their exterior walls or roofs. In these cases, Water-Cooled Air Conditioners are the ideal solution as the entire system is located within the property.

Rather than releasing heat to the outside world like traditional air conditioners (via a condenser box), Water-Cooled Air Conditioners have an internal unit connected to the mains water. Cold water is pumped through the system, keeping it cool and allowing the internal air conditioners to run efficiently.

Ceiling-Mounted 'Cassette' Units for Shops

- More discreet and aesthetically pleasing

- Hidden within a suspended ceiling

- Preserves valuable wall space

Ceiling-mounted ‘cassette’ units are another good option for shops. Although they are slightly more expensive than wall units, ceiling ‘cassettes’ are almost entirely hidden within a suspended ceiling and therefore more discreet and aesthetically pleasing; all that is visible is an almost flush facia panel.

A significant advantage of ceiling cassette AC units is that they do not take up valuable wall space, which is often better suited to selling than being 'home' to an air conditioning unit. They also provide a balanced four-way airflow and are best placed in the centre of the shop, which helps eradicate any 'hot spots', keeping all your customers happy!

Under-Ceiling Units for Shops

- Powerful airflow up to 10m

- Ideal for large shop spaces

- Mounts directly onto the ceiling

Under-ceiling air conditioners are best suited to large shops as they provide powerful air flow up to 10m from the unit. Unlike ceiling ‘cassette’ units, which are placed within a ‘false ceiling’, they are mounted straight on the ceiling itself (usually near a wall).

While they are not as aesthetically pleasing as other options, they are the most powerful option in terms of air flow. The power of these units allows us to recommend fewer units than we would have recommended with another style of unit. This often helps reduce installation costs and frees up valuable wall space, too.

Single-split air conditioners have one internal cooling unit and one external condenser box. These are the most basic and standard systems installed. They are ideal for cooling a single room and are usually the most cost-effective option.

They are also used in situations where multiple air conditioners need to be controlled individually (e.g., heating an office in winter while still requiring cooling in a server room).

Ducted Units for Shops

- Most aesthetic air conditioning solution

- Hidden entirely within a suspended ceiling

- Only small grilles remain visible

Ducted air conditioning systems are ideal for high-end shops when appearance is of the utmost importance. They are generally the most expensive option; however, they are certainly the most aesthetic solution, as the ductwork and internal units are hidden entirely within a suspended ceiling, with only small grilles remaining visible.

Installing a ducted system is best undertaken as part of a building project, but it can also be retrofitted if a suspended ceiling is already in place.
