VRV / VRF Systems
Depending on the manufacturer, larger air conditioning systems are usually known as VRV or VRF systems.
Daikin invented the technology over 39+ years ago and named it VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume); other manufacturers use the name VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow), but the systems run similarly.
If you are looking at installing an air conditioning system with more than 4 or 5 indoor units or require heat recovery (see below), then a VRV or VRF system will usually be the recommended solution
Both systems have cooling and heating functions, but some models within the range can recover either heating or cooling from one area and use it in another. For example, in winter, in a glass building with one side south-facing and the other north-facing, the people who are getting the sun may be too warm, and the people in the shade too cold.
Using a heat recovery system, the excess heat from the south-facing side can be used to heat the north-facing side; the opposite would occur in cooling mode in the summer. This is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method, as the heating or cooling energy that would otherwise have been wasted is instead reused in an area where additional and costly cooling or heating would otherwise have been required.
